We recently completed an LED ambient lighting project that turned a flat, single-fixture room into a layered, professionally lit space. Here's what we installed, why we chose the fixtures we did, and what the finished result looks like.

Introduction
Ambient lighting is the foundation of good room lighting design. It's the general, even illumination that fills a space without harsh shadows — typically provided by recessed downlights, surface-mounted LED panels, or cove lighting. In this project, we installed a full ambient LED lighting layout in a residential living and dining area in Los Angeles, replacing a single center fixture with a properly planned grid of recessed LED downlights on a dimmer.
The Plan: Recessed LED Downlights on a Dimmer
The homeowner wanted warm, dimmable lighting that worked for everything from casual evenings to dinner parties. We planned a 4-inch recessed LED downlight layout — 6 fixtures in the living area, 4 in the dining space — all tied to a single Lutron Caseta dimmer for each zone. Color temperature: 2700K (warm white) to complement the wood tones in the room.
What We Installed
- 10 recessed 4-inch LED downlights (IC-rated for insulated ceilings)
- New 15-amp dedicated circuit from the panel for the lighting zones
- Two Lutron Caseta dimmers — one per zone — for independent control
- All wiring run through the attic space with clean junction box placement
- Smooth-finish trims for a clean, modern look
The Rough-In Process
The rough-in is the part most homeowners don't see but that determines how clean the finish looks. We laid out fixture positions on the ceiling (spacing them to avoid shadows and hot spots), drilled clean holes, fed wire through the attic, and installed new-work recessed cans. Every box got a proper support brace — no fixtures wobbling or sagging over time.

Before and After
Before: one center pendant, uneven light distribution, dark corners. After: even ambient illumination across the entire room, fully dimmable, with warm color temperature that makes the space feel inviting rather than clinical. The homeowner immediately commented that the room felt 'finished' for the first time.
